LV Data Cabling FAQ
Common questions about data cabling, ethernet, fiber, WiFi, VoIP, and network infrastructure for Las Vegas businesses.
Data Cabling Questions
What is data cabling?
Data cabling refers to the structured wiring infrastructure that carries network, voice, and other low-voltage signals throughout a commercial space. This includes ethernet copper cable, fiber optic cable, and other low-voltage wiring that connects network devices back to a central point such as a patch panel or network switch.
What types of data cabling do you install?
We install Cat6 and Cat6A copper ethernet cable, single-mode and multimode fiber optic cable, and low-voltage cabling for wireless access points, VoIP phones, and IP security cameras. All installations include end-to-end testing, consistent labeling, and as-built documentation.
How long does a data cabling project take?
Project length depends on scope. A small office with 10 to 20 drops can typically be completed in one day. A larger buildout with 50 to 100 drops and a full network rack setup usually takes two to three days. We provide a time estimate with your quote so you can plan accordingly.
Do you do residential data cabling?
Our focus is commercial properties — offices, medical spaces, warehouses, retail, and multi-tenant buildings. We do not typically take on residential projects.
Ethernet and Network Cabling Questions
What is the difference between Cat6 and Cat6A?
Cat6 cable supports gigabit speeds at standard office distances (up to 100 meters). Cat6A supports 10-gigabit speeds at the same distance with better interference rejection. Cat6A is larger, stiffer, and costs more to install. Cat6 is the right choice for most standard office installations. Cat6A makes sense when 10G speeds at the edge or long cable runs are part of the plan.
How many ethernet drops does my office need?
As a baseline, most workstations need at least one data drop per device location, plus drops for printers, VoIP phones, wireless access points, and IP cameras. A common rule of thumb is to install more drops than you think you need — adding drops during initial construction is significantly less expensive than adding them later in a finished space.
Can you add ethernet drops to an occupied office?
Yes. We work in occupied spaces regularly. We plan cable routes to minimize disruption and schedule around your business hours when possible. The scope of disruption depends on the building's construction — drop ceilings and open plenum ceilings are much easier to work in than finished drywall.
What cable testing do you perform?
We test every cable run end-to-end using a cable tester that verifies wire map, length, and signal performance. For installations requiring cable certification, we use a certifier that generates pass/fail results for each run to the specified cable standard. Test results are included in the project documentation.
Fiber, WiFi, VoIP, and Security Camera Questions
Does my office need fiber optic cabling?
Not necessarily for most standard office environments. Fiber is typically used for backbone connections between network closets, inter-building connections, and high-bandwidth applications requiring 10G or faster speeds. Most desktop devices connect via copper ethernet. We can assess your situation and tell you whether fiber makes sense for your specific setup.
How many wireless access points does my space need?
A general starting point is one access point per open area, with additional units for enclosed rooms, hallways, and high-density device areas. The exact count depends on ceiling height, wall materials, device density, and the wireless hardware being used. We plan coverage from your actual floor plan rather than just square footage.
Do you handle VoIP phone cabling?
Yes. IP phones connect over standard ethernet cable using PoE. We run cable drops to each phone location, terminate at the patch panel, and label them consistently. Your VoIP provider or IT team handles the phone system configuration — we deliver the physical cabling layer.
Can you run cabling for security cameras?
Yes. PoE IP cameras use the same Cat6 cable as network devices. We run the cable from each camera location back to the NVR or PoE switch, mount the cameras at the planned positions, and document the installation. Your security system integrator handles configuration and recording setup.
Project Planning and Quote Questions
How do I request a quote?
Call us at (702) 479-5566 or visit our contact page. The more detail you can provide about your space and project needs, the more accurate the estimate we can give you. We respond promptly and do not pressure you to commit.
What information helps you provide an accurate quote?
Useful details include: the type of space (office, warehouse, medical, retail), approximate square footage, estimated number of drops or devices to cable, whether it is a new buildout or an existing space, and any specific requirements such as fiber backbone or outdoor cabling. A rough floor plan is helpful but not required for an initial estimate.
Do you work with general contractors?
Yes. We regularly work as a low-voltage subcontractor on tenant improvement and new construction projects. We coordinate on timing, rough-in schedule, and documentation requirements. Reach out early in the project — cabling is most cost-effective when planned and installed during construction rather than after walls are closed.
Do you provide documentation after the job?
Yes. Every project includes as-built documentation showing cable runs and port assignments. This is a standard part of our installation process, not an add-on. Your IT team receives a port map so they can manage the infrastructure without having to trace wires.
Service Area Questions
What areas do you serve?
We serve businesses throughout the Las Vegas valley, including Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Summerlin, Spring Valley, Enterprise, Paradise, Winchester, Centennial Hills, Green Valley, Silverado Ranch, Anthem, Southern Highlands, and Boulder City. See our full service area page for the complete list.
Are you based in Las Vegas?
Yes. Our office is at 3960 Howard Hughes Pkwy, Suite 500, Las Vegas, NV 89169. We are a local company — not a national franchise or call center. You work with our team directly from quote to completion.
Do you serve Boulder City and outlying areas?
We do work in Boulder City. For areas further outside the Las Vegas valley, contact us to confirm we can service your location — we will give you a straight answer on availability.
